About Brea

Tar and oil

Brea, Orange County

Brea is the Spanish word for tar, and oil seeps in the nearby canyons drew drillers here in the 1890s. The boom town that followed incorporated in 1917. Pumps still work in the hills, and the Olinda Oil Museum preserves a well that has been producing since 1897. Baseball pitcher Walter Johnson spent his teenage years in the oil camp of Olinda.
